GROSSMAN POSTS FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES ON CAMPAIGN WEBSITE
Somerville businessman calls on Legislature to bring disclosure and
Transparency rules in line with the Internet age
Steve Grossman, Somerville businessman and Democratic candidate for State Treasurer, today posted the financial disclosure forms he has filed with the State Ethics Commission on his campaign website (www.stevegrossman.com/financialdisclosure).
Noting a Boston Globe report that the press and public have faced lengthy delays in obtaining these disclosures, he said: "At a time of public skepticism of government and politics, it is crucial that we have more disclosure, not less. We need to ensure that our laws and procedures reflect the Internet age. There is no reason why key disclosure forms, subject to minor editing to protect privacy concerns, should not be instantly available online."
Grossman has pledged that if he is elected Treasurer he will "put the Commonwealth's checkbook online" so that citizens can track where their money is being spent and will "fully disclose all the Treasurer's office's contracts and business dealings. The only way to help rebuild public confidence," Grossman said, "is to show that there are no secret deals and no insider arrangements."
He also called on the Legislature to change the Commonwealth's disclosure law to allow Internet posting and to provide the Ethics Commission with the resources needed to promptly respond to public requests for the release of disclosure forms. "Nearly 30 other states do this now, Massachusetts should be among them."
Grossman also called on other candidates for Treasurer to follow his lead. "Given the office's lead role in Massachusetts's public finances and its dealings with powerful financial interests, we should be leaders in increasing the transparency of campaigns and, if elected, the management of the Treasurer's office."
He said he was proud that "our campaign already is disclosing the full occupation and business affiliations of more than 96% of its contributors, one of the highest rates of any campaign in Massachusetts. The law says that if a donor does not comply, you can meet your obligation by sending him or her a letter. That is not good enough. We go back to donors repeatedly to ensure that we get the necessary information."

Campaign Update: Steve is on the Move!
Of course, it is hard not to mention Steve's famed Ice Cream Tour. Every chance Steve gets, he stops to talk to voters and try new flavors at local ice cream shops. Recent visits include Ben & Bill's in Oak Bluffs (awesome Butter Crunch), Peaceful Meadow in Middleboro (unbelievable Maple Almond), Ron's in Hyde Park (amazing Maple Walnut), and Kate's Seafood & Ice Cream in Brewster (out of this world Grape Nut and Frozen Custard!).
All this trekking around the state has not gone unnoticed. Recently the Boston Herald published an article entitled "Edge, Grossman in treasurer race." Steve has also received recent endorsements from the American Federation of Teachers in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the Sierra Club's Massachusetts Chapter, and the Boston Ward 4 Democratic Committee, among other organizations. Another exciting phenomenon is the vast amount of supporters that have been attending events for Steve, holding signs, and canvassing neighborhoods on Steve's behalf.
Lastly, three experienced members of the Grossman team have been named to senior positions. Greg Shanahan of Weymouth, Francis Orlando of Quincy, and Chandra Allard of Quincy will bring their experience and skills to our campaign's grassroots organizing efforts. Greg has been named Field Director for the campaign, Francis has been named Political Director, and Chandra has been named Deputy Field Director. These moves stem from Matt O'Malley's departure from the team as he announced his own candidacy for the Boston City Council Ward 6 seat. Steve says that he "regrets Matt's departure, but understands his long-standing desire to seek a City Council seat. The fact that we can make these appointments from the ranks of those whom Matt has recruited or worked with is testimony to the sound organization he has created, and which will carry us to victory in September and November."
Please stay tuned as we continue on the road towards Election Day!

A Triumphant Day in Worcester
As Steve said after the vote, we set out to get a strong endorsement in Worcester and went on to win an overwhelming one — one that positions us to prevail in the Sept. 14 primary and carry us on to victory on Nov. 2. Please help us build on the momentum by making a contribution to the campaign.

Protecting Your Money: Managing the Pension Funds
Steve has a three-part proposal - paying down liabilities, additional pension reform, and a new investment strategy - some of which would require new laws. But as the head of the Pension Reserves Investment Management Board (“PRIM”), the Treasurer has the authority to make major moves toward a more prudent and effective investment strategy for our $44 billion pension holdings that protects both retirees and taxpayers.

Meeting the Test of Time
Companies founded in 1910, the Globe noted, had to overcome the exodus of manufacturing industries from Massachusetts, "the Great Depression, a Great Recession, and a dozen downturns in between; adapt to changing tastes and technologies; and fight off ever-fiercer competition in a globalized economy. Needless to say, the list of survivors is short. But as the state's economy evolves at increasing speed, they provide long-lasting stability for their employees, customers, and owners."

Steve's sons David & Ben
Steve is proud to have been a part of running a business that has literally met the test of time - and is equally proud of the job David and Ben are doing to keep evolving and reinventing the company to compete successfully in a challenging and changing economy.

Grossman Files More Than 10,000 Signatures and is Certified as Candidate; Wins Endorsement in Boston Ward 5
Press Release, Thursday, May 20, 2010
GROSSMAN FILES MORE THAN 10,000 SIGNATURES AND IS CERTIFIED AS CANDIDATE;
WINS ENDORSEMENT IN BOSTON WARD 5
Momentum builds for Democratic candidate with nearly $1 million raised
and more than 200 communities visited
Steve Grossman, Democratic candidate for State Treasurer, announced today that his campaign had filed more than double the number of signatures required and had completed all the necessary state paperwork to qualify as a candidate. He also announced that on Tuesday he received the two-thirds vote needed to win the endorsement of the Ward 5 Democratic Committee in Boston.
"This was an exceptional grassroots effort," Grossman said. "I want to thank the thousands of voters across the Commonwealth, volunteers, and my staff who made all this possible." A candidate for Treasurer is required by state law to collect 5,000 valid signatures, and the Newton businessman said he was "pleased to have far exceeded the required number."
Regarding the Ward 5 vote, he said, "I was particularly gratified to have received the endorsement this week from the Ward 5 Democratic Committee in Boston. It demonstrates growing political strength throughout the city and is a clear indication of the effectiveness of our statewide organizing effort."
He also announced that his campaign's fundraising efforts had resulted in nearly $1 million in contributions from almost 3,000 donors. Grossman said he has already traveled 25,000 miles during his campaign and visited more than 200 cities and towns.
"I've gone to work every day for 35 years running our 100-year-old, family owned business," said Grossman who is Chairman of Grossman Marketing Group in Somerville, "and I'll bring that same work ethic to the Treasurer's office to protect the public's money, help create jobs, and boost small businesses. My campaign is about speaking to voters about common-sense solutions to our problems."
The next step for Grossman is the June 4-5 Democratic State Convention in Worcester, where he must get 15% of the delegate votes to be on the September 14 State Primary ballot.
