Local banks team with state to lend money to small businesses
18 June 2013
BOSTON — Community banks participating in the state treasury’s Small Business Banking Partnership have made more than 4,700 new small business loans totaling more than $705 million since 2011.
South of Boston, six participating banks represent 35 percent of those loans – $242, 645,065 – made to 1,608 businesses.
The figures were released by state Treasurer Steven Grossman.
The program, initiated by Grossman in May 2011, moves treasury cash reserve funds typically held by large national and international financial institutions and deposits them in amounts of up to $10 million in Massachusetts community banks.
In exchange for the deposits, the banks agree to enhance their loan portfolios to small Massachusetts businesses, with a focus on women-, minority- and veteran-owned businesses.
“I’ve had the opportunity to travel all over the state and visit business owners who are the recipients of loans leveraged through the Partnership,” said Grossman. “The stories are inspiring. In almost all cases these loans create jobs.”

Expansion of financial education program under way in Quincy
7 June 2013
By next year, Quincy officials hope their business students won’t be the only ones who know how to balance a checkbook.
The Quincy Public School system is in the midst of expanding its financial literacy program, with the help of a state grant designed to bring the knowledge to a wider population.
“My first objective is no high school student graduates without some basic and fundamental knowledge of financial empowerment,” said state Treasurer Steve Grossman, whose office is behind the pilot program. “If Sesame Street can teach kids to save a nickel or dime a week to five year olds, we should understand embedding it into the curriculum is a wise thing to do.”
